Free app's for the lates and greats mobile phones

1. Layar
Augmented reality's hottest title, Layar, uses the GPS, compass and camera to display information on your surroundings in real time. Either hold it in front of you, and see details on landmarks and points of interest, or search for something like 'pizza', and relevant locations will be displayed.

2. Metal Detector
And you thought the compass was only good for location-based functions. Using the little lump of magnet in your device, when pressed against metal (a set of keys, belt buckle or someone's hidden weapon) Metal Detector announces its detection with alarming results.

3. Google Sky Map
Nevermind if you live in a city and can't actually see stars, Google Sky Map will point them out on the screen using the GPS, accelerometer and compass. Planets, stars and constellations like you've never seen them before.

4. Tub Thumper
Use your Android's touchscreen to its full potential by pretending you're Mick Fleetwood with Tub Thumper. Tap drums in time to your favourite tracks, or make up your own songs on the acoustic and electronic skins.

5. Gmote
Download the Gmote app on your Android, install the Gmote Server on your Mac or PC, and hey presto, you can use your mobile as a remote control for your computer when watching movies or listening to music.

6. Movies by Flixster
Watch movie trailers, see movies that are on near you (using GPS, naturally) and read reviews, from the world's largest online movie network with Movies by Flixster.

7. BreadCrumbz
As the name suggests, drop little virtual breadcrumbs as you go about your business. Using the GPS, BreadCrumbz tracks your route, displaying pictures so you know exactly how to get to the location again, particularly useful if you're on foot. The one downside is that the little toast icon that appears in the update curtain makes us crave carbs like never before.

8. Chomp SMS
We may've just been extolling the virtues of Android against the iPhone, so why suggest Chomp SMS, an app that turns the text message interface into an iPhone replica? Granted, it's a cleaner look, but also uses an easier virtual keyboard than your Android can offer…and yes, it looks just like the iPhone's, how ever did you guess?

9. Barcode Scanner
Use the camera to scan a barcode on a DVD, book, CD or other product, and Barcode Scanner can find details online about the product, including the cheapest price online, reviews and even passages of text if it's a book.

10. Bonsai Blast
Free (decent) games are hard to come by on the Android platform, but Bonsai Blast proved so addictive we've finished it twice now. Essentially a new take on the puzzle format, it has 24 increasingly difficult levels which will ensure you miss your train stop at least once while playing it.

1. AP Mobile 2.5.7
The Associated Press; www.ap.org
Mobile devices need good news apps. The Associated Press has taken this challenge seriously from the start, offering a bevy of programs for today's various powerful smartphone platforms. The Windows Mobile version offers much of what makes the iPhone version great, including robust touch screen support, several levels of subcategories, and plenty of customization options. The app lacks video streaming, but it hooks into all the major social networks for sharing stories with friends. AP Mobile can be downloaded from the Windows Marketplace.
2. Bing for Mobile
Microsoft; www.bing.com
Microsoft had its heart in the right place with its mobile Windows Live initiative, but the company couldn't pull all the pieces together properly. Bing for Mobile is a vast improvement; it offers access to all of Bing's top features, including movie time searches and real-time traffic reports. It still leans a little too heavily on Internet Explorer Mobile for some tasks, which is never a good thing. But its robust search, GPS, and maps support make it a go-to app for whenever you're heading out on the town. Bing is available in Windows Marketplace.

3. CleanRAM 1.8
htcAddicts; handheld.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Enhancements/cleanRAM-74823.shtml
Despite Microsoft's claims to the contrary, the company never figured out how to properly manage memory on Windows Mobile devices. Consequently, tasks pile up in the background, slowing down your handset and chewing up available RAM. You can go hunting for the Task Manager, but it's probably easier to just fire up CleanRAM, which offers several levels of "purge" to restore your handset's performance with a single button press. Download CleanRAM by going to the Web site above.

4. Facebook for Windows Mobile 1.0
Microsoft; www.microsoft.com
Nothing is going to turn a Windows Mobile device into an iPhone. But Facebook for Windows Mobile 1.0 comes close, with its attractive, responsive interface that supports multiple screen resolutions. It also uploads photos and recorded videos straight from your phone to your Facebook account. Facebook for Windows Mobile has problems; it incorrectly displays hidden items in your news feed, and lacks home screen alerts. But it's still a worthy download for mobile Facebook mavens on a frantic search for their next fix. Facebook is available in Windows Marketplace.

5. Google Maps for Mobile 3.2.1
Google; www.google.com/gmm
Google Maps for Mobile has been around forever on Windows Mobile; we last reviewed it on a Windows Mobile 5.0 device in 2007. It still offers accurate, easy to use maps and local search. It's GPS enabled, and it offers turn-by-turn directions (without voice prompts) and real-time traffic reports along with all of the super-sharp road and satellite maps you'd expect from Google. Download Google Maps by going to the Web site above.

6. Microsoft My Phone (beta)
Microsoft; myphone.microsoft.com
My Phone (beta), Microsoft's free online storage and over-the-air sync service, offers users 200MB of storage. It syncs photos, videos, and documents via a surprisingly slick interface. It's not a panacea, as it doesn't sync e-mail, phone settings, or apps. And strangely, it only works once per day. But given that Apple is charging $99 per year for its MobileMe service, the free My Phone is quite attractive. Download My Phone by going to the Web site listed above.

7. Opera Mobile 10 (Beta)
Opera Software; www.opera.com/mobile
Opera's browsers continue to reign supreme on mobile devices. The latest Opera Mobile 10 (beta) brings plenty of horsepower to the party, along with a brand-new Speed Dial launch screen, tabbed browsing, and Turbo server-side compression technology. Got Flash? Opera Mobile doesn't, but Skyfire 1.0 does; while it doesn't quite beat Opera's browser in usability, it makes up for it with Flash support. We say to just get both. Download Opera by going to the manufacturer's Web site listed above; Skyfire is available through the Windows Marketplace.

8. PockeTwit 76
Open source; code.google.com/p/pocketwit/
PockeTwit is a full-featured, if sometimes frustrating Twitter app with an aggressively unusual interface of sliding panels, large photos and contextual menus. If you can figure out how to use it, it has the full array of Twitter functionality, including support for multiple accounts, conversation view, URL shortening, and photo uploads. It's available from the Web site above. Tweeters looking for a simpler experience might want to consider TwitToday instead, a basic Twitter home-screen plug-in that you can get from http://dalelane.co.uk/blog/?p=244.

10. Viigo (Beta)
www.viigo.com

It offers one-button access to the latest news, weather, sports, entertainment news, market info, and travel updates. It also condenses feeds from dozens of sources into a single, unified interface that's all content and no fluff—not always a simple task on mobile devices.
